ChemFinity Technologies is developing new critical mineral recycling processes with lower projected costs and >99% reductions in energy usage, water consumption, and CO2 emissions compared to traditional mining. Our patented innovations involve high-performance filters that selectively recover >20 different minerals—including gold, platinum-group metals, rare earth elements, and copper—from complex waste streams such as e-waste, catalytic converters, and wastewater. What sets us apart is the tunability, robustness, and performance of our sorbent technology. Our technology can be used in various hydrometallurgical conditions and demonstrates among the highest reported metal selectivities, extraction capacities (up to 1,000x higher than incumbents), and recovery rates. Our record-breaking performances are due to our sorbent filter pores serving as molecular recognition sites, designed with the optimum combination of binding pocket chemistry, size, and shape. Furthermore, our cyclable processes are inherently modular and use standard equipment such as columns and pumps, enabling decentralized deployment and co-location across many sites (e.g., next to waste collection facilities). Our vision is to reduce the cost of metal recovery from waste, increase accessibility to enhance recycling rates, and enable full metal circularity. ChemFinity spun out of a world-leading materials chemistry lab at UC Berkeley in late 2022. Now based in New York City, ChemFinity is backed by organizations such as Breakthrough Energy Fellows, ARPA-E, the U.S. DOE, the U.S. EPA, USDA, and the U.S. NIH. ChemFinity’s commitment to cost-effective and sustainable metal recovery is highlighted by the team’s Grand Prize Award in the global Conservation X Labs Artisanal Mining Challenge.
