Oorja is a Farming-as-a-Service company working at the intersection of clean energy and sustainable agriculture. Our solution is a farm-based package of services powered by decentralised solar PV energy, using a unique Pay-Per-Use (PPU) business model. We provide affordable solar irrigation and agro-processing services to smallholder farmers without requiring upfront costs, coupled with climate-smart farm advisory services. Our mission is to empower 1 million farmers globally by 2030 with the agricultural services they need to sustainably increase their income and quality of life. What distinguishes Oorja is our innovative Pay-Per-Use business model in the Indian agricultural sector. This B2C model eliminates the upfront cost barrier for technology acquisition, making solar technology accessible, affordable, reliable, and convenient for low-income customers. It removes the need for end-user financing and addresses the investment gap for clean energy infrastructure. Additionally, it ensures that the operations and maintenance of solar assets are managed, allowing the equipment to be utilised throughout its 20-year lifespan. Globally, the dominant approach has been to promote direct sales or leasing of solar technology, primarily reaching middle-income and wealthy farmers. In a direct sales model, after-sales service is often inadequate, leading to disuse of assets following technical issues. Oorja’s inclusive model transforms solar technology into an affordable service accessible to any nearby farmer, specifically targeting smallholder and marginalised farmers. By removing the upfront cost barrier, our model provides energy access to last-mile agrarian communities.
