Zvandiri connects young people living with HIV with trained, HIV positive peer counsellors to assure health, happiness and hope. Our story started in 2004 in Harare, when a young girl Simbisai asked for a support group where HIV positive adolescents could learn and share how to grow up living with HIV. They wanted more than the medicines – they wanted support for their mental health and well-being. Named by young people themselves, the 'Zvandiri' support group (meaning ‘as I am’) was formed. It started with a group of volunteers, 6 adolescents and no funding. Over the last 19 years, that first Zvandiri support group has evolved into a globally recognised, evidence-based, holistic model of peer-led, HIV and mental health services for children and adolescents. Services are delivered by trained peer counsellors in their client's homes, health facilities, support groups and through digital platforms to support them to both survive and thrive. Programme data and three randomised controlled trials confirm improved HIV treatment and mental health outcomes among young people supported by Zvandiri.Zvandiri has been adopted, led and scaled by the Government of Zimbabwe. In collaboration with WHO, Zvandiri has been replicated in 12 other countries regionally and supports 96,000 young people. The Zvandiri team is 150 ‘Zvandirian’ staff, 30% of whom are former beneficiaries, and 3000 phenomenal peer counsellors living with HIV.
